Referencing the Dutch tradition of detailed realism and hidden symbols, Rena Patterson's paintings place incongruous and conflicting objects from our contemporary culture in juxtaposition. Using traditional painting techniques, she creates unpredictability by placing seemingly dissimilar objects together. However, upon closer examination, we can decipher the meaning of each work. Each object carries with it an association, for example, writing paper, pens, reading glasses and books suggest a reflective life, wisdom and age. Children's toys and Disney characters can suggest an age of innocence, referencing childhood. Each viewer is invited to "read" their own interpretations into the paintings and examine their relevance in today's culture.
