"Light," 2005 Oil and Prismacolor on Panel,
24" x 24"
Gail Werner's work, both her paintings and works on paper, contains dreamlike spaces influenced by Cupeño Indian creation stories. Images from the Southern California landscape and the natural world are layered with cultural images related to pottery vessels, rock art, and basketry design. Often non realistic in style, images are seen floating in an imaginary landscape. This dreamlike quality gives her work a meditative quality that transcends our visual experience with it.
